The Decathlon Sports Club was founded in 1981, and the Decathlon Sports Club of Los Altos began with about 20 children 45 years ago. The program now serves over 700 families from Palo Alto to Los Gatos each summer and is entering its 45th summer. All counselors and senior staff are CPR and First Aid certified. The leadership team includes camp owner Jeff Berridge; directors Scott Berridge, Hana Dvorak, and Tapan Dave; founder of the Los Altos program Rich Wohlstadter, who also serves as camp consultant and mentor and has over 50 years of summer camp experience; founder of the Decathlon Sports Club and camp consultant/mentor/godfather of the program Rich Wohlstadter; Neal Swank; Chris (Coach) Null; office manager Celena-Lynn Squires; and Tapan Dave as director. The program states that its goal and focus include great staff, hard work, emphasis on safety and service, attention to detail, individualized attention, and understanding and catering to what children enjoy and need, and that staff are motivated and dedicated to maintaining a fun, safe, educational, supportive, positive camp environment. Decathlon Sports Club of Los Altos highlights “Summer fun since ’81,” a “From Camper to Counselor” pipeline, and a staffing ratio of about one staff member for every 6 or 7 children. The program has been recognized as a Bay Area Parent Family Favorite. One parent, Liming, shared that their child Phoebe has attended for three years, described her as picky, and reported that she always has good things to say about Decathlon and her counselors.
