About
Read With Me pairs students with volunteers for reading, assisting with pronunciation, assisting with comprehension, and providing positive feedback. Volunteers, called “Literacy Friends,” may work with students one-on-one or in small groups, and elementary age students who need extra help with literacy and comprehension are provided a personal tutor or Read With Me volunteer. Many times the volunteer is a senior citizen, creating a multi-generation experience between the student and the volunteer.
• Ages: 5–11 years old
• Schedule: Volunteers work 1–2 hours a week and are assigned to one class for the duration of the school year.
The Read With Me program is part of the Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation, which was founded in 1984. The SCV Education Foundation promotes innovation and excellence in education through community engagement and investment opportunities in fifty-five public schools. The foundation works closely with all five school districts within the Santa Clarita Valley: Castaic Union School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, Sulphur Springs Union School District, and the William S. Hart Union High School District, and recruits volunteers from across the community, including the Senior Center, College of the Canyons, and other local organizations.
Testimonials about the program include: “I am SO OVER THE MOON EXCITED! I love your program! Thank you for blessing me and the kids this way.” from Mrs. Langford at Fair Oaks Ranch, and “My Read With Me volunteer is OUTSTANDING. She has been working in my classroom for over ten years and her dedication and generosity have been outstanding.” from Jason Shelton at Newhall Elementary.
