• Ages: 5–16 years old
Grip n Rip Tennis was founded in 2006 and has been based at Newport Beach Tennis Club since then. It describes itself as an OC Leading Junior Tennis Program Since 2006, and reports that Swing & Smash Summer Tennis Camp has been a summer favorite in Orange County for nearly 20 years. The program reports that 2024 marked a record 750 participants, that it welcomed 850+ kids in 2025, and that it plans to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026.
The program states that it is dedicated to developing young players from their first steps on the court to competitive excellence, and that its mission is to foster a love for tennis in every child using a positive and engaging teaching approach. It reports a focus on building strong fundamentals, confident players, and long-term development at every stage, using age-appropriate equipment, fun drills, and competitive play. Grip n Rip Junior Tennis notes that it provides age- and skill-based programs with a clear path for growth, including the Gripper Development Program, which focuses on teaching the fundamentals of tennis, and the Ripper Performance Program, which focuses on refining skills for higher levels of play.
The program hosts numerous UTR match play events and tournaments. It offers a complimentary makeup week at the end of each session, during which students may attend on their registered days. Students can be admitted after any session has begun on a prorated basis by calling the office, and 15-minute player assessments can be scheduled for families who are unsure of program or class placement. The program states that a refund or credit for missed classes during a session is only applied due to a child's injury or lengthy illness, with doctor records requested.
The leadership and staff team includes Executive Assistant Gemma Teladro, Programming Director Lucas Monterroso, Tournament Liaison John Craig, and coaches John Michael, Sonal, and Sunil. The program states that it is proud to be one of the region’s leading youth tennis programs in Orange County, helping kids grow both on and off the court.
Parent testimonials describe the summer camp as a favorite, mention instructors who combine technique and fun, and note that some children ask to be signed up for additional weeks. One parent reports that their child’s first-ever camp experience at Grip n Rip summer camp felt welcoming and fun, with many games and noticeable learning in just a few days, and that this led them to enroll in a fall after-school program where tennis became the child’s favorite sport. Another parent reports that both of their daughters have been in the program for several years, mentions the atmosphere and facilities, and highlights coaches including John Michael, Sonal, and Sunil, as well as flexibility and a place for every level.
