• Ages: 5–11 years old

Children Rising Tutoring Programs was founded in 2001. Its mission is to nurture and equip children to rise above the challenges created by generations of poverty, violence, and educational inequity. Program areas include Path2Math and Succeeding by Reading, and the program focuses on elementary school children in East Bay public schools most affected by poverty, violence, and educational inequity. Children Rising uses trained volunteer tutors and provides family support for children enrolled in its programs, using a faith-inspired, non-proselytizing approach.

Children Rising mobilizes community support for struggling elementary school children living in Oakland’s lowest-income neighborhoods. It has over 200 trained tutors and mentors from church congregations and diverse community and business partners, offers services to 36 under-resourced public schools, works with 20 congregations and 25 diverse community partners, and partners with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).

The leadership team includes executive director Jim Wambach, community engagement manager Bronwyn Harris, Director of Development Chelsea Boniak, and volunteer opportunities contact Julia Melancon. Press inquiries are directed to Eric Steckel.

Testimonials from tutors describe the program’s focus and approach. Path2Math tutor Carl Anderson states, “I think helping students in school is very important because you're giving them practical skills they're going to need to succeed in middle school, high school, and beyond.” Succeeding by Reading tutor Suzanne Bourque shares, “Joaquin loves to read. The challenge has been keeping him within the limits of what he knows and gradually advancing to bigger and better words because he wants to keep going and read, read, read.” Another Succeeding by Reading tutor, Iyana Amayani, says, “Because I don't have my own children, I want to help leave something behind, doing some good for all the children. So they're all my children!” Tutor Robert C. Field notes, “The training and experience of the Children Rising team is very important to success. Their ongoing evaluation of the students, and suggestions for dealing with particular student needs, greatly enhance the ability of the tutor to stimulate progress by the student.”
