About

Coelho Epilepsy Youth Summer Camp offers a residential camping experience for children with epilepsy. Campers stay overnight for a full week and take part in a structured camp session supported around the clock by physicians and nurses specialized in epilepsy care. Medication schedules are strictly controlled by nurses, who ensure campers receive their proper medication each day.

• Ages: 9–17 years old
• Schedule: One-week residential session from June 23, 2024 to June 28, 2024; campers usually check in early afternoon on the first day and depart around late morning on the last day

At Coelho Epilepsy Youth Summer Camp, medical professionals, including a UCSF pediatric epileptologist, a physician assistant (PA), a nurse practitioner (NP), and nurses, stay overnight at the camp with campers throughout the entire week, both day and night. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from camp, as transportation is not included. Through generous donations, the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California is able to offer full and partial scholarships to campers and reports that it has never turned down a child due to financial need. Families need to use a Google account to apply because several camp forms must be uploaded, and the application takes about 40 minutes to complete; if a Google account cannot be created, families may email for assistance and alternative ways to apply. Parents are comforted knowing that medical professionals stay overnight at the camp with campers throughout the entire week, both day and night.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California, which runs the camp, has been leading the fight to stop seizures and to overcome the challenges created by epilepsy since 1953. The foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of those affected by epilepsy by helping them overcome day-to-day challenges, providing community support, and raising awareness through education to reduce stigma surrounding those with epilepsy. The foundation also works with state and national representatives on legislation and advocacy and organizes awareness and fundraising events such as Walk 4 Epilepsy SF, Seize the Moment Run, Zoo Stroll for Epilepsy, and a Gala. The organization has been awarded Gold Transparency on Candid for 2025.
