About
Youth Centers of Orange Programs offers after-school and extended learning programs under the name Youth Centers of Orange. The programs include The YCO @ Palmyra, a Before & After School Care Program, and the YCO ELO-P Program, which provides after school opportunities made possible by the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program in the State of California. The programs state a focus on enrichment, academic support, courage-building, and “fun with a purpose,” and follow a youth development model of Belonging, Usefulness, Influence, and Competency.
The Youth Centers of Orange states that it empowers children to become “World Changers” through character development, social interaction, and confidence-building, and that it serves underserved youth in Orange, including low-income families and many facing homelessness and other socioeconomic challenges. The organization describes itself with the phrase “For Orange, by Orange, in Orange,” and notes that it fosters a sense of community and opportunity so children can grow into confident, compassionate leaders. The Youth Centers of Orange began as the Old Towne Boys & Girls Club in 2017 in partnership with the Tustin Club, became an independent after school program in 2018, and in June 2020 The Hub OC came alongside the Youth Centers of Orange to support its growth. The Youth Centers of Orange has partnered with Palmyra for a Before & After School Care Program and with the Orange Unified School District for after school opportunities funded by the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program in the State of California, and is brought to families by The HUB OC, a local nonprofit. Founders listed for the Youth Centers of Orange include The John & Liz Valentine Fund, The Peter & Mary Muth Trust, The Nancy Nelson Trust, The Community Foundation of Orange, Orange Rotary, and Chapman University. The leadership team includes Director of Operations Joanna Fermin, Director of Programming Edgar Garnica, and board members Gary Remland, John Aust Ph.D, Kevin Ritchie, and Madison Aust, who is a licensed REALTOR and property manager at John Aust Realty and administrative assistant for C P Appraisers. A YCO parent describes the program as something families in Orange had been waiting for, especially for families struggling to stay afloat, and calls it a “God send” to have a place where kids are safe and doing something positive.
