About

Desert Sands Friday Night Lights Flag Football offers flag football and cheer. The program includes multiple divisions at every age group to create more competitive balance, with teams of 6–8 players in the all-girls division. New all-girls flag football teams play in the same coed league on the same Friday nights and on the same fields.

• Ages: 4–16 years old
• Schedule: Spring season and a fall season from August to November, with practices on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:00PM to 8:00PM and games on Friday nights

Desert Sands Friday Night Lights Flag Football has run for 24 consecutive seasons. The league’s stated purpose is to develop the youth in the community, with a focus on personal and team development, good sportsmanship, and having fun. The program includes an exclusive “Catching Kids Doing Things Right” recognition program, a Chick-FIL-A meal award for community service and academic excellence off the field, and a Handel's Ice Cream award for athletic excellence on the field. Everyone makes the playoffs, the maximum score differential is 22 points, the league rewards defense (points allowed) rather than points scored, and there is a running clock with no time outs if a game becomes lopsided. The league notes better equipment such as balls, jerseys, and flags, as well as better referees and coaches, better trophies, medals, and rings, added fields and security, and free Mother’s Day roses for mothers. Chick-Fil-A, Handel's Ice Cream, Las Carretas Taco Shop, E-Pel's Frozen Lemonade, and pizza vendors are listed as partners, and sponsor plaques are currently backordered due to supply chain issues. Community involvement includes a Chick-FIL-A meal award focused on community service and academic excellence off the field and an improved special event canned food drive. The league is described as the #1 Youth Flag Football League in California, the #1 Flag Football League in the Coachella Valley, and the #1 Character Development League in the Valley. Girls’ flag football is noted as an official CIF sport in the context of increased female participation, and no dogs are allowed on school premises due to a district restriction. The commissioners are Tom Roche and John Maldonado; John handles younger grades Kinder through 4th Grade at 760-636-8266, and Tom handles older grades 5th–10th Grade at 949-836-4753.
