Team NorCal Summer Camps is entering its 17th year of summer camp operation, and in 2025 Team NorCal will be celebrating its 16th year of sponsoring teams across various age groups, with over 4,000 travel team players in the program since 2008. The program offers separate boys and girls tracks with separate fields and instructors, with beginner and intermediate/advanced level camp options, half day, full day, and overnight camp options, and a Bear Valley Overnight Camp that is geared toward advanced players and not for beginners. Camps average about 80 players per camp, ranging from 50 to 120 depending on location, and are described as the largest, most vibrant camps in the Bay Area and the largest lacrosse summer camp provider in Northern California.
Beginner camps are staffed by high school players and adult coaches, with girls led by Colleen Niklaus, Team NorCal’s Executive Director and Director of Girls’ Programs, and boys led by Ryan Bolaños, Team NorCal’s Director of Boys’ Programs; both are former teachers. Lead coaches include Ryan Bolaños, who is also Head Coach at Junípero Serra High School, Head Coach for Coyotes Youth Lacrosse, involved with San Jose State Men’s Lacrosse, and the CCS High School Coach of the Year 2025 and USA Lacrosse High School Coach of the Year 2025; Brent Tovrea, who coaches Team NorCal high school boys travel teams, is Head Coach at Los Altos High School, was CCS High School Coach of the Year 2022, and is a former captain of Sonoma State Men’s Lacrosse; and Colleen Niklaus, who is Executive Director and Director of Girls Programs, Head Coach of travel teams, former Head Coach of St Ignatius Varsity Women’s Lacrosse with four Number 1 rankings in the State of California, founder and former Head Coach at Scotts Valley High School, and former Girls Director at the Santa Cruz Warriors. The leadership team is listed as Colleen Niklaus, Executive Director and Director of Girls Programs, and Ryan Bolaños, Director of Boys Programs.
Team NorCal Lacrosse states that it is a year-round competitive program that helps build great lacrosse players and student-athletes, with a philosophy focused on teaching the whole child and helping each player grow and improve on and off the field. The program offers mentoring to players who are interested in becoming coaches and giving back to the lacrosse community. Team NorCal is described as the oldest and most successful lacrosse development program in the San Francisco Bay Area and the largest lacrosse summer camp provider in Northern California, with championships in events such as IWLCA tournaments, the Vail Shootout, the Maryland Summer Sizzle, the Santa Barbara Showdown, Pacific Lacrosse Festival, GoldRush, and Sandstorm. A large majority of USA Lacrosse–named high school All-Americans and Academic All-Americans over the last decade in Northern California are identified as Team NorCal players and alumni, and in 2015 Team NorCal alumni played on NCAA Lacrosse Championship teams at Denver (D1), Limestone (D2), Tufts (D3), and Onondaga (JuCo), with multiple alumni playing in the MCLA and WCLA National Championship tournaments in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Free loaner equipment is available for boy and girl beginners to use during camp, and all campers receive a reversible Team NorCal pinnie to use and keep. Campers who already own some or all of their gear are encouraged to bring it, with girls needing a mouthguard, stick, and goggles, and boys needing a mouthguard, stick, helmet, gloves, armpads, and chest protector. The program lists EarlyBird discounts for summer camps through February 20, a special advanced-only track for girls at the June 8–11 day camp in Palo Alto, a special advanced-only track for boys at the June 15–18 day camp at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, a promotion for new beginner campers who register for two weeks of beginner camp to receive a free stick, and an offer that campers who register for two or more weeks of full-day summer day camps receive a new beginner stick to keep.
