About

Ballet Folklorico is a dance class where students do simple stretches to warm up, learn choreography, and take part in student performances. The program also includes making the skirts for dancers and sewing and designing wardrobe for dancers. Families take part in fundraising to keep the program going and in soliciting donations for the dancers’ wardrobe and other supplies.

• Ages: 6–17 years old
• Schedule: Every Monday after school

On September 19, 2016, Puente, ALAS (Ayudando Latinos a Soñar – Helping Latinos Dream) Tonantzin, and Pescadero Elementary School launched the Ballet Folklorico class for children ages 6 to 17. Over 30 children stay and dance Ballet Folklorico every Monday after school at the school. Puente aims to nurture and grow this program in collaboration with the students’ parents, and leadership will come from the community and will be supported by Puente. Some of the parents are excited about making the skirts and bringing other community members to help in sewing and designing, and parents are responsible for fundraising while families solicit donations to keep the program going over the coming years, for the dancers’ wardrobe and for other supplies. The class is open to everyone, and it is a collaboration between Puente, ALAS, Tonantzin, and Pescadero Elementary School.

Barron has danced professionally for over 30 years, has experience studying under Amelia Hernandez, and graduated from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, the premier art academy in Mexico City. The leadership team for this program includes Rita Mancera, Executive Director of Puente; Erica Hays, principal of Pescadero Elementary School; Belinda Arriaga from ALAS in Half Moon Bay; and Maestro Zenon Barron as the dance instructor. Puente’s programs and services have provided an essential lifeline to South Coast families since 1998, and Puente’s mission is to foster wellness and prosperity in the San Mateo County South Coast communities of Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar, and San Gregorio by promoting and advocating for equitable access to education, health, and economic security.

One of the moms shared, “I like that he is strict.” Erica Hays, principal of Pescadero Elementary School, said, “I’ve been excited to see how many students of all ages are participating in the folklorico classes. There has been a lot of enthusiasm for it. One goal of our after school program is to provide enrichment activities for the children and this is a great opportunity for them.” Dance instructor Zenon Barron said, “What I like best about my career as a dance instructor is ultimately working with the children because I consider it the perfect age to develop and nurture their creativity,” and, “I believe that through dance, younger students can develop a sensibility for artistry that will make allow them to develop into successful human beings.” Rita Mancera, Executive Director of Puente, said, “As an organization, we are always finding ways to bring our community together,” and, “This is a great example of bridging the students’ experiences with that of their parents. Many of the mothers remember dancing folklorico when they were young, including me.”
