About

Petaluma Karate Club offers karate training that treats karate as a way of life, with a focus on more than just self-defense. Training in the dojo includes attention to respect, discipline, heightened awareness, improved concentration, and fitness, along with a mental or spiritual component described as an important part of true martial arts.

The program states that training in the dojo is not just for learning self-defense but also for learning about oneself. Petaluma Karate Club is a proud member of The International Karate Daigaku. The club identifies its history with the notation © 2022 Petaluma Karate Club.

A quote shared by the program from Joe Hyam, author of “Zen in the Martial Arts,” describes a dojo as a miniature cosmos where students make contact with their fears, anxieties, reactions, and habits, and as an arena of confined conflict where an opponent is a partner who helps them understand themselves more fully. This quote also describes the dojo as a place where conflicts inside help with conflicts outside, where total concentration and discipline in martial arts carry over to daily life, and where constantly attempting new things becomes a source of learning and self-enlightenment. Another quote shared by the program from Masutatsu Oyama states, “The longer you train in karate, the more you learn about yourself.”
