PALS Programs offers PALS San Francisco as a week-long summer camp. The program hosts this camp on a university campus and is volunteer-led. PALS Programs interviews, hires, and trains young volunteer leaders to plan summer programs from the ground up.
• Ages: 12–18 years old
• Schedule: Week-long summer camp; PALS staff are available 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (EST) Monday through Friday, excluding holidays
• Price: The cost of a full week of camp for participants with Down syndrome is $2,300.
PALS Programs states that its mission is to create inclusive camp experiences for people with and without Down syndrome. PALS San Francisco will have a licensed medical professional and two medical volunteers with applicable certifications on-site for the duration of the week. PALS San Francisco is accredited by the American Camp Association, and all week-long summer Camp PALS programs are accredited by the American Camp Association and CampSafe certified. PALS Programs recommends that all participants stay up to date on vaccinations, following CDC guidance, and verifies Tdap and Meningococcal/Meningitis vaccines as specified.
PALS Programs works with every participant to identify support such as waiver funding, payment plans, and partial and full scholarships. PALS Programs is comprised of full-time, part-time, seasonal, and intern staff who work throughout the year in areas of development, fundraising, and formation of partnerships to maintain programming quality, and they build and maintain partnerships through local outreach and help reach new communities. The leadership team includes Jenni Newbury Ross (Co-Founder & Executive Chair), Shelby Jones (Executive Director), Matt Lafreniere (Program Director), Lauren Gibeault (Program Manager), Kirsty Scott-McDonald (Program Manager), Courtney Lane (Leadership Coordinator), Leslie Cubias (California Regional Program Manager), Wilms Villanueva (Executive Assistant), Bella Montez (California Regional Program Coordinator), Kenzie Wilson (Enrollment Coordinator), Sarah Rogers (Operations Associate), Angelina Quint (Development Associate), Brittany McCarthy (Development Associate), and Kamille Burris (Intern). One volunteer described PALS Programs by saying, “PALS is a glimpse into the world we want to create. PALS proves that true inclusion is possible.”
