Sierra Nevada Journeys Outdoor Education Camp offers hands-on outdoor science learning where students engage in science, explore how ecosystems function, and learn about climate resilience firsthand. The program includes outdoor school, leadership programs, and youth development programs, along with activities such as a day hike, a 40-element challenge course with an alpine tower and zipline, an archery range, and basketball and volleyball.

Sierra Nevada Journeys Outdoor Education Camp operates on a 469-acre Outdoor Education Camp that has been expanded to a total of 1,499 acres of immersive outdoor learning space, including a ¾-acre pond and creek system, a 40-element challenge course with an alpine tower and zipline, an archery range, and basketball and volleyball courts. The camp has 26 buildings, including a lodge, 16 cabins, four yurts, an administration building, two outdoor amphitheaters, and an aquatics center, with modern facilities that can accommodate 240 campers. Sierra Nevada Journeys was founded in 2006, the 469-acre camp was built in 2003, and for the past 15 years Sierra Nevada Journeys has brought students to camp for outdoor school and hosted community partners; the organization purchased the Outdoor Education Camp in 2020 through a $5.57 million capital campaign and is approaching its 20th anniversary.
Sierra Nevada Journeys is a leading outdoor science education nonprofit serving youth across Northern California and Northern Nevada, with more than 10,000 students and families participating each year in programs at Sierra Nevada Journeys Outdoor Education Camp, and more than 30,000 youth served annually across the region. Fifth- and sixth-grade students travel by bus with their schools from across the Bay Area, Central Valley, Greater Sacramento Region, and Northern Nevada, and most students come from high-need communities across Northern California and Northern Nevada. Sierra Nevada Journeys hosts a variety of community partners for leadership and youth development programs, and together with Feather River Land Trust, both nonprofits are supported by dedicated donors and community partners and are planning a day hike and celebration of the new property in early spring after the winter snow melts.
Feather River Land Trust holds a conservation easement on 1,025 acres of forest, meadow, and wildlife habitat that permanently protects the property’s conservation values and more than doubles Sierra Nevada Journeys’ existing 469-acre Outdoor Education Camp, creating one of the largest youth-centered educational landscapes in the Northern Sierra. Feather River Land Trust has conserved more than 100,000 acres of critical headwaters and habitats in the Feather River Watershed and owns and manages five nature preserves, including the Nature Center at the Sierra Valley Preserve. Leadership connected to the camp and its expansion includes Sean Hill, President and CEO of Sierra Nevada Journeys; Corey Pargee, Feather River Land Trust’s Executive Director; Joe Schofield, Chair of the Sierra Nevada Journeys Board of Trustees; and Lisa Blauth of Sierra Nevada Journeys.
Sean Hill, President and CEO of Sierra Nevada Journeys, describes the expansion as “more than a land transaction—it’s an investment in our children and the landscapes they will inherit” and says it “allows us to reimagine what’s possible for hands-on, outdoor science learning in the Sierra.” Corey Pargee, Feather River Land Trust’s Executive Director, states that “conserving ecologically important lands in the Feather River region and connecting kids to nature is core to our mission” and notes that the property “features outstanding wildlife habitat, springs, and Feather River tributaries.” Joe Schofield, Chair of the Sierra Nevada Journeys Board of Trustees, says the gift “significantly expands Sierra Nevada Journeys’ ‘living classroom,’ where students engage in science, explore how ecosystems function, and learn about climate resilience firsthand” and calls the land “a major milestone in ensuring our mission—and our impact—will flourish for generations.”
