Students supplement private study with group music classes, music theory, and ensembles, and use music to interact with the community. Students have goals such as monthly music practice challenges, graduating to a new book, and performing in the annual graduation concert.
The program is owned and operated by musicians Robert Miller and Christopher Mallett, who also serve as directors. Lessons are taught by university-trained music teachers with extensive performance experience.
The California Conservatory of Guitar was founded in May 2011 in Santa Clara, California, and in the fall of 2017 it reopened as The California Conservatory of Music. Since 2011, a stated goal has been to instill in students a passion for music that will last a lifetime. The program’s mission states that it is committed to the idea that all students have great potential, which can be developed through a positive and motivational environment, consistent practice, and first-rate musical instruction.
In 2014, the school gained national recognition from the Guitar Foundation of America, which selected one of its guitar ensembles to perform at the organization’s annual convention. Over the years, students have received awards and recognition from the Pacific Youth Society, the Berkeley Bach Festival, the Christopher Parkening International Guitar Competition, and the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Music Development Program.
Students from the school have performed outreach concerts all over the world. Recently, students performed at the Omni Foundation Concert Series in San Francisco and the Guitar Foundation of America’s Convention in Los Angeles, and over the years they have performed with the Peninsula Youth Orchestra.
Parent testimonials describe children starting lessons as young as preschool age and participating in individual lessons, group lessons, small and large group performances, and parental involvement. Parents mention the Suzuki method, long-term study over several years, and staff who are described as talented, engaging, patient, and dedicated to excellence balanced with gentle motivation.
