About

Mathnasium offers math tutoring and homework help using the Mathnasium Method proprietary teaching approach. The program provides face-to-face instruction in a group setting and uses mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques. Students work from assessment-based personalized learning plans that reflect their skill level, challenges, and academic goals, and support is available for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT.

• Ages: 5–18 years old

Mathnasium supports K–12 students of all skill levels, with personalized programs by grade: Elementary School (kindergarten through grade 6), Middle School (Prealgebra to Geometry), High School (Algebra and Precalculus), and University/Adult (calculus, statistics, discrete math). In-center and online tutoring options are available, and homework help is included as part of sessions. Mathnasium reports that 94% of parents saw improvement in their child’s math skills and understanding, 93% of parents reported an improved attitude toward math, and 90% of students saw an improvement in their school grades. Mathnasium reports that 1.5 million students’ lives have been impacted to date, and there are more than 1,100 Mathnasium locations worldwide.

The centre director is Jerry, who is a former software developer. The staff includes Raydon, who is studying at BCIT with plans to become an architect; Jon, who is a senior at Richmond High Secondary and part of the IB Diploma Programme; Lily, who is a Psychology major at the University of British Columbia; and Andrea, who is a second-year student in the Pharmaceutical Sciences program at UBC. Mathnasium’s mission statement is to teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it, based on a belief that anyone can succeed in math with the right materials, instruction, and support.

Mathnasium’s specially trained math tutors work with students across the V7C 1J2, V7C 1J8, and V7C 4J3 postal codes and serve families in Richmond and nearby areas, including Steveston, Garden City, and Terranova. Jon also volunteers as a badminton instructor at the local community centre.

Parent feedback includes comments that Mathnasium has helped a child’s confidence in math and that children enjoy attending classes. One parent reports seeing a tremendous improvement in a child’s attitude toward math and that the child now loves math. Other parents describe Mathnasium as more than tutoring, mention that their child became excited to do math, and note outcomes such as a child earning a first “A” on a report card.
