About
Richmond Swims Kids Swim Lessons is part of the Richmond Swims program, which focuses on swimming skills, competitive swimming, fitness, and friendship. The program follows the Richmond Swims mission to serve Richmond residents of all ages and skill levels through these swimming activities. Kids in the program take part in swimming skills and competitive swimming while also engaging in fitness and friendship within the swim setting.
Richmond Swims Kids Swim Lessons is connected to a long history at The Plunge, which was created through a bond issue in 1926 and later reopened in 2010 through the efforts of Richmond Friends of Recreation (RFR). RFR was organized in 1979 as a non-profit to support community recreation programs and worked with the City in a Public/Private Partnership to raise funds to retrofit, upgrade, and reopen The Plunge after damage that included the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and a permanent closure decision in 1997. Residents protested when The Plunge was slated for demolition, and people were allowed to swim there until August 2001 before it ultimately reopened. Richmond Swims is the evolution of RFR and continues to provide swim programs in The Plunge for the Richmond community, supported in part by the Save the Richmond Plunge Trust established under RFR’s tax-exempt status to raise funds to renovate The Plunge.
