Sun Yat Sen Chinese Institute, also known as Zhongshan Tutoring, was established in 1982 as a nonprofit educational institution and has over 40 years of history. It is described as a nonprofit Chinese language and cultural arts school that offers Chinese language using the traditional writing system and maintains small classroom sizes and low teacher-to-student ratios. The institute offers arts, language, and culture classes that focus on conversational Chinese for community members who do not have an Asian heritage background and have little or no conversational ability. Its mission states that it provides an encouraging environment to learn the Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture, aims to foster a life-long interest and appreciation for it, and is committed to creating an inclusive environment across all its programs regardless of race, age, ethnicity, or disability. The institute’s stated goal is to cultivate a supportive learning environment and foster strong working relationships with members of the local and school communities, and its events are intended to involve the local community in cultural projects that promote a deeper understanding of Asian culture and its place within a diverse, evolving American landscape.

The institute has been serving the San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles area through teaching the Chinese language and cultivating Chinese culture and tradition, with listed service areas including Alhambra, El Monte, Montebello, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, and several local school districts. Programs include field trips such as visits to 99 Ranch Market and the Huntington Library Art Museum & Botanical Gardens. For Summer Session 2026, there is an Early Bird Enrollment discount ending on May 22, 2026, and family discounts are available, with tuition listed monthly for 4-week sessions and notes that some options exclude lunch. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for multiple programs, and After School Program enrollment by a stated date waives the registration fee. The institute notes that refunds will not be given after the second day of class for the Weekend Morning Chinese Intensive Program and that it is moving from Monterey Park to a new location in Rosemead effective from fall 2024.
