Muck and Wonder Farm School

Muck and Wonder Farm School is a licensed full-day preschool program where children take part in nature-based play, process art, explorations and play invitations, caring for animals, farm chores, gathering times, and community celebrations and events. The school day takes place mostly outdoors on a historical acre that includes fruit trees, sand, water, mud pie stations, a community garden, Muck Mountain, Log Land, and many open-ended opportunities for exploring, creating, climbing, sensory play, and swinging. Children also engage in gardening, songs, movement, herbology, and forest craft.

Muck and Wonder Farm School states that its teachers design curriculum that is specific to each group of children and their interests and needs. The program’s mission includes a belief in playful learning, in children playing and connecting to the natural world, and in children and parents having a connection to community. It also states that children need to feel safe and supported by the adults in their lives, that children’s families should be woven into their lives and learning environment, and that children are natural risk-takers, explorers, creators, thinkers, doers, artists, and social change makers of the next generation. The mission further states that children should have space to ask questions and come up with their own answers, that “PLAY IS PRACTICE and WHOLE-BODY LEARNING,” that the best learning opportunities take place when a child’s whole body is engaged and they are excited and passionate about their ideas, and that children feel an innate connection with nature and deserve to be outdoors as often as possible. Animals live on the property, and the program states that these animals teach about unconditional love, stubbornness, and silliness.
