About
Play-Well TEKnologies Enrichment Programs offers Engineering with LEGO enrichment programs where students use tens of thousands of LEGO pieces in hands-on, minds-on learning. Each meeting begins with a short discussion and demonstration of the day’s topic, followed by design and building assignments, challenges, performance testing, competitions, and opportunities for modifications to projects that explore concepts in physics, architecture, mechanical engineering, and structural engineering. Students work individually, in teams, and as a group, and all materials for the course are provided each week, with no LEGO pieces sent home after camp.
• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: Classes typically meet once per week before or after school for an entire quarter (Fall/Winter/Spring), and session duration is generally 90 minutes.
• Price: Pricing varies based on area, course being offered, number of sessions, etc.
Play-Well TEKnologies Enrichment Programs offers core programs for elementary students called Adventures in STEM and STEM Explorations, along with Summer Camps, After School Classes, Homeschool Classes, and Birthday Parties. The program also offers Play-Well At-Home Videos so students can build and learn along with instructors anytime and anywhere. Instructors have varied careers and educational backgrounds, including mechanical engineering, architecture, biology, art, geology, education, and civil engineering, and an assistant instructor may be added at Play-Well’s discretion, with class minimums and maximums varying by area and school. The mission of Play-Well TEKnologies states that kids are already naturally gifted creators and that the organization strives to provide an environment where students can create without fear of mistakes, explore fundamental STEM concepts through play, and express their creativity in ways they never thought possible. These programs are not authorized, sponsored or endorsed by the LEGO Group.
The leadership team includes President Tim Bowen; Vice President of Administration and Human Resources Meredith Bowen; Vice President of Operations Jennifer Gaona; Regional Managers Mike Spee, Michael Beddall, Tasha Rodriguez, and Chrissy Close; Office and Administrative Manager Devon Lee; and Program Manager for Virginia, Maryland, and D.C., Ilana Adler.
Parent feedback about Play-Well TEKnologies Enrichment Programs includes comments that instructors are “well-organized and fun” and that “regardless of who the instructor is, the program stays strong.” One parent described an Engineering with LEGO class as having “completely met and exceeded my expectations” and shared that a five-year-old participant later built motorized cars, a double belt and double pulley driven gondola, a belt and pulley driven escalator, and a facsimile of an egg beater at home. Other parents noted that their children “had a blast,” “cannot wait to attend each week,” and that the class “works with all sorts of kids” who “LOVE the creativity,” with one parent calling an instructor “a 5-star instructor” who taught, trained, and guided children while holding them accountable “in a very tactful and kind way.”
