About

Play-Well TEKnologies Enrichment Programs offer LEGO-inspired engineering classes where students take part in an Engineering with LEGO enrichment program using over 20,000 pieces of LEGO. In these classes, students explore concepts in physics, architecture, mechanical engineering, and structural engineering through design and building assignments, challenges, performance testing, competitions, and modifications to projects. Core programs for elementary students include Adventures in STEM and STEM Explorations, and additional options include Summer Camps, After School and Homeschool Classes, and Play-Well At-Home Videos.

• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: Classes typically meet once per week before or after school for an entire quarter (Fall/Winter/Spring), and session duration is generally 90 minutes.
• Price: Pricing varies based on area, course being offered, number of sessions, etc.

In each meeting, there is a short discussion and demonstration of the day’s topic, and students work individually, in teams, and as a group. Instructors provide individual assistance and instruction, and all materials for the course are provided each week, with no LEGO pieces sent home with the child after camp. The instructors have varied careers and educational backgrounds, including mechanical engineering, architecture, biology, art, geology, education, and civil engineering. The mission of Play-Well TEKnologies states that the organization strives to provide an environment where students can create without fear of mistakes, explore fundamental STEM concepts through play, and express their creativity in ways they never thought possible.

The leadership team includes President Tim Bowen; Vice President of Administration and Human Resources Meredith Bowen; Vice President of Operations Jennifer Gaona; Regional Managers Mike Spee, Michael Beddall, Tasha Rodriguez, and Chrissy Close; Office and Administrative Manager Devon Lee; and Virginia, Maryland, D.C. Program Manager Ilana Adler. The programs are not authorized, sponsored, or endorsed by the LEGO Group.

Parent feedback includes comments that instructors are well-organized and fun, that the Engineering with LEGO class stays strong regardless of the instructor, and that children have built motorized cars, a double belt and double pulley driven gondola, a belt and pulley driven escalator, and a facsimile of an egg beater at home after attending. Parents also report that their children look forward to attending each week, that the class works with all sorts of kids, and that children enjoy working with motors and making things move.
