About
Ascend Aerial Arts offers aerial silks, aerial straps, and aerial rope classes, along with aerial fitness classes and handstands training. The program includes an intro to aerial silks class, ongoing aerial silks session classes, aerial drop-in classes, and private aerial silks parties. Students can also participate in the Ascend Aerial Showcase.
• Ages: 12–18 years old
• Schedule: Session aerial classes run as a series over a specific period, typically a month; private aerial silks parties are available on Saturday afternoons.
Ascend Aerial Arts began in March 2014 with an open showcase for students of all levels and held its first full student showcase and scratch show in December 2014. Since then, it has produced at least one showcase annually, with a brief pause during pandemic-related studio closures, and resumed its showcase tradition in 2023. The program describes its community as passionate about recreational aerial silks, aerial straps, and aerial rope classes in a supportive environment and emphasizes that aerial silks safety is a top priority and that aerial silks involve significant risk.
The program offers an Aerial Silks Program for beginner through advanced levels, with a focus on silks safety, the art of performing, silks technique, and theory. It promotes safety education for the aerial community, including guidance to never train alone, not to learn from social media channels such as YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, to train only in a safe and prepared space with a minimum of 14 feet of height and 6 feet of width of unobstructed space in every direction with a crash mat, and to never hang aerial apparatus on trees. Participants must be in good health and in proper physical condition to take part in aerial silks activities, and anyone with physical limitations is instructed to consult a doctor before joining aerial silks or straps classes. Students ages 12 and up with at least 2 years of previous experience training with a professional instructor or studio may schedule an aerial placement assessment.
Ascend Aerial Arts notes that its instructors are passionate aerial artists with a knack for inspiring others and include former gymnasts and dance enthusiasts. The leadership and teaching team includes Program Manager Tammy Shueh; Aerial Straps Instructor Ariel Tal; Aerial Silks Instructors Camille Yabut, Claire Lewis, Connie Ng, Katerina Adamos-Jardine, Laura Cornwell, Tzvetelina Tzeneva, and Anouck Iyer; Aerial Silks & Rope Instructor Colleen Richey; Aerial Rope Instructor Sommer Panage; and Susan Nery, whose role is not specified.
The program serves families in Belmont, San Mateo, Foster City, Redwood City, and San Carlos and partners with Artletic Science Workshops, Paper Doll Militia Teacher Trainings & Workshops, and Trapeze Arts Inc., Night Owl Circus Arts Rigging Fundamentals. Parent and student comments describe knowledgeable and helpful instructors, patient and skilled teachers, and positive experiences in aerial silks classes and private birthday parties.
