Community Music Center was founded in 1921 and has more than a century of history in San Francisco. It has offered music education at the Richmond Neighborhood Center since 1983 and has branches in the Mission and Richmond Districts of San Francisco. Community Music Center states that it makes high quality music accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, regardless of financial means, and offers a generous tuition assistance program. The organization is led by Executive Director Julie Rulyak Steinberg, with board members Renzo Luján and Jim Callahan. Community Music Center partners with many organizations across San Francisco to provide music programming for all ages and describes itself as a cornerstone San Francisco cultural institution and a vital hub for music education and performance anchored in the Mission District. The program highlights wheelchair accessible facilities at both branches, a piano lab, community space, improved acoustics, a concert hall in a renovated Victorian carriage house with hardwood floors and a proscenium stage, and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. It also offers newsletters with monthly updates.
