About
Foodwise Kids is a program where elementary school classes take part in comparative tastings, explore the farmers market, and have a hands-on cooking lesson. During visits, students explore the farmers market, meet farmers, shop in teams together, and enjoy a tasting of seasonal produce.
• Ages: 6–11 years old
• Schedule: Fall semester (August–December), Spring semester (January–May), and Summer camps (June–August)
• Price: Free to SFUSD elementary school students.
Foodwise Kids is a program for elementary school classes in grades 1 through 5 that uses the farmers market as a classroom for empowering the next generation of healthy eaters. Since the Foodwise Kids program launched in fall of 2012, more than 20,000 students from local public elementary schools have participated. Foodwise offers free nutrition and wellness programs to San Francisco Unified School District students and, for the free program, prioritizes the highest need classes in SFUSD grades 1–5 with higher percentages of BIPOC students and students eligible for free and reduced-priced meals. Video resources to supplement in-person field trips and classes are available for independent learning, and virtual synchronous options are also available. Astrid Bonilla is the contact for teachers or educators interested in signing up their class.
