About

Kids & Youth Flamenco Classes introduces children to flamenco dance through activities such as exploring rhythm with clapping (palmas), learning basic footwork, and developing coordination, posture, and musicality. The class is described as fun and engaging and is taught in a positive, age-appropriate environment. It is open to young dancers of all levels, and no prior experience or special shoes are needed to get started.

• Schedule: Fall kids classes with Saturday morning and Thursday afternoon options

The fall kids class for ages 5–9 meets on Saturdays from 9:30–10:20AM with artistic director and choreographer Carola Zertuche. The fall kids class for ages 6–11 meets on Thursdays from 5:00–5:50PM with kids flamenco teacher Cynthia Sanchez. Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco will be on break until June 6.

The program is led by artistic director, choreographer, and bailaora Carola Zertuche and kids flamenco class teacher Cynthia Sanchez. New Mexican-born Cynthia Sanchez has studied, taught, and performed flamenco for 22 years, including early training under Pablo Rodarte and 8 years performing in his company Dance España. From 2006–2012 she studied and performed with the Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre Company and also worked with Maria Benitez Estampa Española, Flamenco Legacy, Teatro Nuevo Mexico, and Miel Amarga. In 2006 she co-founded Dance España-Albuquerque, where she taught and performed, and she studied under Teodoro Morca, Marisol Enciñas, and guest artists from Spain. In spring 2011 she lived in Andalucia, Spain to study with Adela Campallo, Pilar Ogalla, Juana Amaya, and El Torombo. After relocating to the Bay Area, she studied and worked with companies including Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco under the direction of Carola Zertuche, La Tania Baile Flamenco, and Caminos Flamencos, and continued studying with visiting artists from Spain such as Farruquito, La Lupi, Andres Marín, Jose Maya, El Farru, Eduardo Guerrero, Alfonso Losa, Manuela Ríos, and Jesus Carmona. In 2016 she toured with Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe under the arts management of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, including a debut at the Joyce Theater in New York City and a performance at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts. With Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco, she has worked onstage with Adela Campallo in the production Somos and with Carmen Ledesma in (R)evolution and El Rincón Flamenco, and she recently returned from a summer of studying in Spain with Pastora Galvan, El Oruco, Nazaret Reyes, and Choni. In addition to flamenco, Cynthia is a first grade teacher with SFUSD.
