Rhythm & Motion was founded in 1979 by acclaimed dancer, teacher, and choreographer Consuelo Faust, and the current Director is Dudley Flores. Rhythm & Motion’s home base is at ODC Dance Commons in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District, which is described as a beautiful, state-of-the-art home studio. The organization believes that anyone can dance and that the best people to pass along the power of dance are trained, professional dancers, and it is committed to providing performing artists, dance instructors, and choreographers with steady, part-time employment. All Rhythm & Motion teachers draw from a common body of choreography inspired by an eclectic mix of music including Latin, hip hop, African, alternative, and R&B, and the choreography draws on a wide range of dance styles including ballet, contemporary, African diaspora, salsa, hip hop, bhangra, jazz, and more.

The mission of Rhythm & Motion states that it has demonstrated for over 40 years that it can inspire and bring joy into people’s lives through accessible classes that encourage celebration, exercise, and community. Its high-energy dance workout program is described as cultivating a welcoming, accepting atmosphere that promotes health and well-being for all people regardless of age, ability, or background, and it emphasizes the joyful spirit and open expressiveness of dance and invites it into daily life for individuals, friends, families, and the larger community.

Motion Pacific, which hosts Rhythm & Motion classes, is described as the premier center for dance in Santa Cruz and a nonprofit dance education and presentation organization. Rhythm & Motion launched a partnership with ODC School in 2005 and presents local, regional, national, and international artists during its performance season. Rhythm & Motion also offers classes in satellite locations including Motion Pacific in Santa Cruz, Berkeley Ballet Theater in Berkeley, and Bodyvox Dance Center in Portland.

Student testimonials describe the experience of Rhythm & Motion classes, including one student who calls the class “a spiritual experience” and talks about “the power of people dancing,” and another student who says they have “done dance fitness all my life but have never moved like this before” and that the classes and instructors have “truly changed my life.”
