Steppin' Out Dance Studio began in 1995 and evolved out of the historic Betty May Dance Studios, which served children of the Mission District since the 1930s. The studio has been named a San Francisco Legacy Business in recognition of 30 years enriching the community and is one of eleven businesses honored in 2025. Angela Rose Dorantes founded Steppin’ Out Dance with Avilee Goodwin in 1995 and has been the sole director since 2010. Angela completed Foundation training with Shana Meyerson in Spring 2013 and is certified through mini yogis to teach yoga to children ages 3–11. Steppin’ Out’s mission is to offer young people a place to learn dance technique, improve grace, poise, self-esteem, and gain performance experience in a nurturing atmosphere, and to give children and young adults an outlet to express themselves freely through dance. The studio describes its classes as supportive and inspiring for a diverse mix of young dancers in a wide range of styles to honor the dancer in each of them. Angela accepted the San Francisco Legacy Business award at City Hall on June 23, 2025, after giving a speech about Steppin' Out's programs and community. Angela was honored with the S.O.T.A. Dance Achievement Award in 1993.
