About
Tinkering School is a hands-on building program where kids use real tools to solve real problems. Participants work with materials such as wood, metal, cardboard, and sometimes paint, and they team-design and team-create projects together. The program offers chances to tinker after school, during the summer, and on weekends.
• Schedule: Opportunities to attend after school, during the summer, and on weekends
Founded in 2005, Tinkering School is led by founder Gever Tulley. Its mission states that Tinkering School believes that kids are more capable than they know, and to prove it, the program gives them real tools to solve real problems, with an emphasis on learning through doing, making mistakes and learning from them, collaborating, making friends, and trying harder than usual. Tinkering School is a project of the Institute for Applied Tinkering, a non-profit organization. Tinkering School is a trademark of Tinkering Unlimited and is registered in the US Patent and Trademark Office. The program notes that it is celebrating 20 years of “think.make.tinker.” NPR visited Tinkering School Session 1 in 2008 and featured it on All Things Considered, it was presented on the main stage at TED in 2009, and projects and ideas from Tinkering School have been featured in Make Magazine and the New York Times.
