About

Young Audiences of Northern California Arts Programs offers dance, music, visual arts, and theater experiences led by teaching artists. Students take part in inspiring performances that introduce an art form, its cultural context, and its connections to school curriculum. The program also includes hands-on workshops where small groups practice an art form with guidance, as well as in-depth residencies made up of progressive, skill-building workshops that end in a final student performance or project. Expanded Arts Access programming includes adaptive arts learning experiences for at-risk students in underserved schools and for students with special needs and chronic illnesses.

Young Audiences of Northern California creates arts experiences that inspire young people, expand learning, and enliven communities. It provides more than 100 arts learning programs for PreK–12 students of all backgrounds and abilities throughout Northern California and, in the last reported year, served over 74,000 students in 89 schools and 37 school districts. Programming introduces traditional and contemporary art forms from cultures around the world and is designed to bring curriculum vibrantly to life, strengthen learning and social skills, inspire imagination and develop creativity, promote cultural understanding, introduce students to powerful modes of self-expression, and encourage students to create, risk, explore and discover their unique potential.

Young Audiences of Northern California selects exceptional teaching artists who have spent years building their craft. It is a nonprofit organization affiliated with the national Young Audiences Arts for Learning network and has been creating art experiences that inspire young people, expand learning, and enliven communities since 1958. Young Audiences of Northern California became a member of the national Young Audiences Arts for Learning network in 1958; Young Audiences Arts for Learning was founded in 1952 with a mission to inspire young people and expand their learning through the arts. Partnerships with school districts, community foundations, and arts and cultural councils help identify students who are in need of access and current issues that can best be addressed through arts programming.

Parents and educators have shared feedback such as, “Teachers commented that they had never seen the kids so engaged,” from a PTA Coordinator at San Mateo Middle School. A parent from North Hillsborough Elementary School said, “The kids loved this performance and were breathless watching.” A teacher from Redwood City Elementary School noted, “It was so nice to see some of the students who are normally shy in class actively playing their part and volunteering. Smiles were on all of the faces!”
