Precita Eyes Muralists Association, Inc. was established in 1977 as an inner-city, community-based mural arts organization. The organization’s mission is to enrich and beautify urban environments and educate the public about the process and history of community mural art, while nourishing inherent creativity and celebrating the beauty of each community through a collaborative process. Precita Eyes offers public and private mural tours for all ages, monthly mural education workshops for adults, and seasonal community painting workshops, and it also sells mural paint and other mural painting supplies that can be purchased and shipped or picked up curbside. The organization provides programming and workshops in partnership with San Francisco schools and organizations. The founding director is Susan Cervantes, and Luis Cervantes is a co-founder.
Parents and community members have described Precita Eyes as “art for the people” and have noted that its murals address issues such as class struggle, racism, oppression, and other issues relevant to communities of color. Another testimonial highlights that murals are “the people’s art” and mentions that Precita Eyes offers mural tours led by knowledgeable volunteers, as well as classes and workshops and painting supplies at affordable prices.
