Precita Eyes Muralists Association, Inc. was established in 1977 and has been committed to enriching communities through collaborative murals for over 40 years. The organization’s mission as an inner-city, community-based mural arts organization is to enrich and beautify urban environments and educate the public about the process and history of community mural art. It works with a wide variety of neighborhoods and communities, nourishes inherent creativity, and celebrates the beauty of those communities with a deep commitment to collaboration so that the creative work produced is accessible to the people whose lives it impacts. The organization brings art into the daily lives of people through a process that allows them to celebrate their beauty, discover their creativity, and reflect their concerns, joys and triumphs.
The founding director is Susan Cervantes, and Luis Cervantes is the co-founder. Precita Eyes Muralists is one of only a handful of community mural arts centers in the United States. The organization provides programming and workshops in partnership with San Francisco schools and organizations, sponsors and paints community murals throughout the Bay Area and internationally, and co-presents Paseo Artístico with other organizations. It also participates in the Further Triennial, which celebrates Northern California’s creative and cultural life. Mural paint and other mural painting supplies can be purchased and shipped or picked up curbside from the Precita Eyes online store.
One testimonial describes Precita Eyes as “art for the people” and notes that its murals are thought-provoking and speak to issues of class struggle, racism, oppression and other relevant issues to communities of color. Another testimonial highlights that murals are “the people’s art,” recommends taking a mural tour led by a knowledgeable volunteer or taking a class to learn the art behind the art, and notes that the organization offers painting supplies at affordable prices, as well as classes and workshops that can make great gifts.
