About
HFC Youth Sabre Program offers youth sabre fencing training classes that include group instruction, drills, and bouting with strip coaching. The program also offers individual lessons to develop young sabre fencers at different levels, from beginners to elite competitors. Strip coaching during bouting is used to give immediate feedback and to help coaches see each fencer’s strengths, weaknesses, and understanding of tactics, and it also prepares fencers to receive coaching during competitions.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
The program’s mission states that youth sabre fencing helps children learn new skills, set goals, overcome adversity, and exhibit good sportsmanship while having fun and building character. The program describes fencing as a conduit for young athletes to develop skills and learn life lessons that have a beneficial and positive impact on their lives and those around them. It encourages students to start every practice with a specific outcome they want to work toward or achieve by the end of practice, with coaches offering suggestions for younger fencers. The program states that fencing improves perception, concentration, imagination, and quick analytical thinking, and that it develops traits of resilience, self-control, self-confidence, and positive motivation for success.
