About

San Geronimo Childcare Center offers a play-based program that includes music, art, stories, dramatic play, large motor activities, and hands-on natural science. The program serves up to 24 children a day and uses both child-directed and teacher-directed activities. The facility includes toddler and preschool areas with open spaces that support children’s play, their own kitchens and toilets, and direct access to separate and spacious play yards.

• Ages: 18 months–5 years old

San Geronimo Childcare Center is a year-round childcare center with separate preschool and toddler facilities, each with its own classroom, food preparation area, toilet area, and age-appropriate play yard. The classrooms and play yards are self-contained and secure, and there is ample off-street parking. In addition to the classrooms and play yards, the center has access to the surrounding grounds for exploratory walks and other activities. The facility is described as beautiful and new, with natural light and flexible space, and it was designed by nationally recognized preschool designer Louis Torelli.

The current staff have training and experience in early childhood care and provide small group and individual care, with teacher/child ratios of 1/4 in the toddler program and 1/8 in the preschool and Pre-K programs. The school began in 1962 as an informal nursery school and was licensed as the San Geronimo Nursery School in 1966 as the first licensed childcare program in the San Geronimo Valley. In the 1990s it became the San Geronimo Preschool, in 2002 the San Geronimo Preschool and Childcare Center, and in May 2018 it was incorporated as the San Geronimo Childcare Center as an independent non-profit organization with its own board and staff. The center’s administrator is Sadie Carter.

Approximately 80% of the work on the building renovation and expansion was done by volunteers, including school parents. About 25% of the children come from Fairfax and San Anselmo, and the center serves families looking for preschools in Fairfax, San Anselmo, Petaluma, and San Rafael, as well as West Marin towns such as Nicasio, Lagunitas, and Forest Knolls.
