About

San Geronimo Childcare Center offers a play-based program that includes music, art, stories, dramatic play, large motor activities, and hands-on natural science. The program blends both child-directed and teacher-directed activities for children during their day. The facility includes separate preschool and toddler areas, each with its own classroom, food preparation area, toilet area, and age-appropriate play yard.

• Ages: 18 months–5 years old

The center is a year-round childcare program that serves up to 24 children a day. The facility is described as beautiful and new, with natural light and flexible space, and it was designed by nationally recognized preschool designer Louis Torelli. The toddler and preschool facilities have open areas that invite and support children’s play, their own kitchens and toilets, and they open directly to separate and spacious play yards, which have been enlarged and are being improved as funding becomes available.

The current staff bring training, experience, and dedication to their work and provide small group and individual care, with teacher/child ratios of 1/4 in the toddler program and 1/8 in the preschool and Pre-K programs. The program operates as an independent non-profit organization with its own board and staff, and its School Administrator is Sadie Carter. It holds License Number: 210102930.

The school began in 1962 as an informal nursery school and was licensed as the San Geronimo Nursery School in 1966 as the first licensed childcare program in the San Geronimo Valley. In the 1990s it became the San Geronimo Preschool, in 2002 the San Geronimo Preschool and Childcare Center, and in May 2018 it was incorporated as the San Geronimo Childcare Center as an independent non-profit organization. Approximately 80% of the work on the building renovation and expansion has been done by volunteers, including school parents, and about 25% of the children come from Fairfax and San Anselmo. The center serves families looking for preschools in Fairfax, San Anselmo, Petaluma, San Rafael, and West Marin towns such as Nicasio, Lagunitas, and Forest Knolls.
