• Schedule: Office hours during the school year are Monday–Thursday 8:45 am–3:30 pm and Friday 8:45 am–2:30 pm, with summer office hours Monday–Friday 9:00 am–2:30 pm.
Mandala Children's House was founded in 1975 and has been serving preschool-aged children in the Bay Area for 50 years. The program includes Montessori preschool and transitional kindergarten (TK) classes and follows a developmental model enhanced by the learning practice of Maria Montessori. The mission states that academics, emotional literacy, and character development are highly valued, and that the school focuses on nurturing the entire child intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically through a balanced, integrated approach to learning. The program includes a unique “Nurturing the Spirit” social-emotional curriculum, with social-emotional development woven into daily activities, and teachers act as guides who foster a sense of community through shared responsibilities, group work, and respectful interactions.
Mandala Children's House offers several class groupings: Cocoons is a first preschool class for young 2-year-olds using simple activities, music, movement, and floor play; Caterpillars is a preparatory class for young preschoolers using hands-on learning activities and Montessori materials; Ladybugs is a traditional Montessori preschool class for 3- to 5-year-olds where children learn academic skills through Montessori materials and whole-body learning; and Dragonflies is a longer preschool day geared toward pre-kindergartners who are eager to explore the classroom more fully. The program has rolling admissions and enrolls children year-round as space allows. Mandala Children's House has been voted Best Montessori School in Silicon Valley seven years in a row and has been voted Silicon Valley’s Best Montessori Preschool by Bay Area Parent.
Mandala Children's House was created to serve the children and families of the East Foothills community of San Jose and supports cultural, religious, ethnic, and social-economic diversity that is representative of its community. The program states that it focuses on the development of the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—while nurturing the child and supporting the family. It also states that it models communication and creative problem-solving for children and adults, creates an environment where teachers, staff, and child care providers learn and thrive through support of their personal and professional growth, and works to sustain harmony between the needs of the individual and the needs of the whole program.
Parent testimonials describe the teachers as talented, professional, and nurturing, and the staff as incredibly helpful and friendly, with a clear priority on the child and their well-being. Other parents note that teachers and staff are focused on the whole child, social and emotional elements of early learning, and learning through play, and that the environment and teachers are strongly recommended. Additional comments describe the school as reflecting values of respect for every human being and environmental responsibility, and say that staff nurture, praise, and celebrate each child's unique qualities while working in partnership with parents to “bring out the best” in each child.
