About

Bay Area Chess Enrichment includes regular chess camps, online chess camps, chess lessons, a chess club, practice tournament games, casual free-play games, and strategy games. Camp activities include group instruction and demonstrations, organized pairings, puzzles, analysis, and free-play puzzles and gaming. A practice tournament is usually hosted in the middle of the online course.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: In-person morning camps typically run 9AM–1PM with early drop-off available 8:30–9AM, and some 2026 in-person sessions are listed as 9AM–12PM, 1PM–4PM, or 1PM–5PM; online camps in 2021 run May 31–August 6 as 3-hour camps for Levels 2–4 on weekdays from 2PM–5PM (PST), with additional online chess classes June 17–August 14 on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (times not specified).
• Price: Online 3-hour camp pools for Levels 2–4 are $43 per 3-hour camp, with a 10% discount when registering for more than one course in the same transaction.

Bay Area Chess Enrichment asks families to pack a child’s lunch, and snacks are provided to children without one, with a no nuts policy and a no food sharing policy in all camps. Camp snack options may include various branded fruit snacks, apple-sauce, chip variety packs, Rice Krispies Treats, cookie or cracker variety packs, cracker snacks, fig bars, granola bars, fruit roll-ups, breakfast biscuits, popsicles, Pringles variety pack, juice variety pack, and bottled water. Early drop-off from 8:30–9AM is available when registering.

Coaches host a variety of lessons at a ratio no higher than 10:1, and online coaches split players into optimized learning groups by estimated level. In-person camps are for players of Level 1–4 (under 1250 USCF or under 1650 ChessKid), and prior chess knowledge is not required to attend a Bay Area Chess camp. Players that are new to Bay Area Chess receive a free 1-year gold membership to ChessKid.com and are added to the Bay Area Chess club. Bay Area Chess is CDC compliant.

Bay Area Chess has operated from 2008–2026. The founder of Bay Area Chess is Salman Azhar. The stated mission is to introduce children of all ages to everything that chess has to offer, socially and academically, in the Bay Area and beyond.
