Founded in 2005, the Santa Cruz County Lacrosse Association is an independent, non-profit youth sports organization and a 501c(3) corporation. It runs programs for boys and girls ages 4–14, with team brackets at 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U. The Elementary School Winter League for ages 4–9 is coached by high school and middle school players with adult mentors. Financial scholarships are available through an application process, and financial aid is based on need and not on athletic ability or prior experience, with information provided in both English and Spanish. The association is organized as part of the Northern California Junior Lacrosse (NCJLA) context, and its mission is to develop players and coaches for lacrosse in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment while growing lacrosse in Santa Cruz County and promoting sportsmanship and personal growth. The Santa Cruz County Lacrosse Association is run by passionate parent volunteers, and Brianna Weller serves as President of the Board of Directors. The organization is looking for referees and can provide training opportunities to become certified to referee lacrosse games, and refereeing is presented as a way for high schoolers to give back to lacrosse and make money at the same time. Lacrosse is one of the nation’s fastest-growing team sports and is one of five new sports set to feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with the IOC approving the inclusion of lacrosse sixes in LA28.
