The Zones is organized into five zones of enrichment that include academics, athletics, creative arts, health and wellness, and life skills and workforce readiness. It offers homework help and one-on-one academic tutoring through the ZIP (Zone In Program) with accredited volunteers. The program welcomes youth with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and makes reasonable accommodations, when possible, within the program structure and staff-to-youth ratio. Staff are trained to supervise youth and maintain a structured environment within a 1 to 20 staff-to-youth ratio, and staff are CPR certified and trained in first aid. The program accepts subsidies such as ELO-P, Sonoma Works, and 4Cs, and offers scholarships based on fundraising events. It also offers classes and camps outside of regular daily programming that are available to both current members and youth who want to enroll in a specific class only.
The Zones traces its history to 1949, when it was founded as The Santa Rosa Boys Club, and after 74 years, in 2023, it adopted a new look and name that reflect an updated, inclusive mission and an emphasis on high-engagement after-school and summer programming across its five zones of enrichment. Its mission is to inspire and engage youth through community-based educational and social enrichment programs in a purpose-driven, positive environment. The organization is a 100% community funded non-profit at its founding and has led local efforts to support families in need during the Tubbs Fire and COVID-19 Pandemic, while providing adaptable, inclusive programs and services that match community needs. A youth participant described one aspect of the program by saying, “The coding program is really cool. I thought it would be hard to make my own game, but I've learned how.”
