The Zones is described as an after-school and summer youth enrichment program that offers a high-impact curriculum and state-of-the-art creative outlets during non-school hours across five areas: academics, athletics, creative arts, health and wellness, and life skills and workforce readiness. Programs are stated to promote social-emotional learning, problem-solving, and effective communication, and youth with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) are welcome to participate, with reasonable accommodations made when possible within the program structure and staff-to-youth ratio. Staff are trained to supervise youth and maintain a welcoming, structured environment within a 1 to 20 staff-to-youth ratio, and staff are CPR certified and trained in first aid. The program accepts subsidies such as ELO-P, Sonoma Works, and 4Cs, and offers scholarships based on fundraising events.
The organization behind The Zones reports a history that began in 1949 as The Santa Rosa Boys Club, a 100% community-funded nonprofit, and notes that after 74 years it adopted a new look and name with an updated, inclusive mission and a focus on high-engagement after-school and summer programming. Its mission statement is to inspire and engage youth through community-based educational and social enrichment programs in a purpose-driven, positive environment, to inspire and engage through social, educational, and recreational activities that empower youth to have a positive impact on their community, and to meet each child’s needs and foster their unique talents to make them college and/or career ready. The organization states that it provides adaptable, inclusive programs and services that match community needs and that it led local efforts to support families in need during the Tubbs Fire and the COVID-19 pandemic. A youth participant, Kaycie, age 10, states, “The coding program is really cool. I thought it would be hard to make my own game, but I've learned how.”
