About
Expressions Dance & Movement Center offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, musical theater, and acrobatics. Dancers take part in community performances, Winter and Spring Recitals, a full-length Spring Ballet, local dance competitions, and events such as performing at Disneyland, the San Diego County Fair, the Santee Street Fair, and trips to New York to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the Spirit of America dance team. Older or more experienced students can join a teacher training program, assist in dance classes, and participate in leadership classes.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Saturday, including morning and afternoon/evening hours
Expressions Dance & Movement Center opened in January 2011 with 5 classes held 1 day a week, 65 students, and one assistant, and has grown to over 700 students, 6 classrooms, and 30 team members. The leadership team lists Darcy Fagerwold as CVO (Chief Vision Officer) of Expressions Dance & Movement, LLC. The studio offers recreational classes, competitive teams, an intensive ballet program called East County Ballet Conservatory, and a full teacher training program whose graduates can become Junior Faculty and receive weekly leadership classes and mentorship with senior staff members.
The mission of Expressions Dance & Movement Center states that it provides dance classes for every age, skill level, and ability, and that its programs are built around keeping kids and their wellbeing at the center of all that they do. The studio states core values that include family first, age-appropriate content, positive role models, giving back, happy and healthy, safe, and building self-confidence, and it describes itself as a “dance family” and aims to be a “Third Place” for students and families. It also notes an emphasis on age-appropriate costumes, choreography, and music, and includes programs for dancers with special needs and buddies who help students with special needs enjoy the benefits of dance.
Expressions Dance & Movement Center highlights community involvement through performances and service projects with chapters of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, including performances at the Santee Street Fair and other community events. Enrollment for classes that begin July 2026 is stated as open, and the studio offers a free trial class option.
Parent testimonials describe the studio as having age-appropriate costuming and choreography, a loving and inclusive environment, and a focus on “building a whole human, and not just a dancer.” Families mention personal attention from teachers, a “dance family” experience, supportive staff and students, and specific praise for instructors such as Miss Brittany, Miss Katie, and Miss Shaylin. Parents also note long-term involvement, growth of the studio over the years, and appreciation for professionalism, encouragement from teachers and assistants, and what they describe as a safe space for their kids.
