About

Expressions Dance & Movement Center offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, musical theater, and acrobatics. The program also includes Dancers with Special Needs classes with buddies who assist students with special needs in participating in dance.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Friday in the afternoon and evening, plus Saturday morning classes

Expressions Dance & Movement Center opened in January of 2011 and has grown from 65 to over 700 students, from 1 classroom to 6, and from 1 assistant to 30 team members. The program is led by Darcy Fagerwold, who serves as Chief Vision Officer of Expressions Dance & Movement, LLC. Its mission is to teach exceptional dance classes in a way that nurtures every child and to partner with parents in their child's development, with a focus on every child feeling seen, cared for, and supported in discovering and developing their unique gifts.

The center offers a full teacher training program with graduates employed as Junior Faculty, along with weekly leadership classes and mentorship for Junior Faculty with senior staff members. It runs the East County Ballet Conservatory intensive ballet program, Leadership Programs, Accelerated Programs, a Ballet Conservatory, and classes for adults. Students can participate in annual Winter and Spring Recitals and a full-length Spring Ballet, and there is an option to try a class for free.

Expressions Dance & Movement Center maintains chapters of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. Dancers participate in community performances and service projects with these chapters and by assisting in dance classes. Students perform at local dance competitions, Disneyland, the San Diego County Fair, the Santee Street Fair, and other community events, and they take regular trips to New York to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the Spirit of America dance team.

The studio’s core values include family first, age-appropriate costumes, choreography, and music, positive role models, giving back, happy, healthy, safe, and building self-confidence. The studio aims to be a “third place” where students and families can connect and be themselves and offers a Dance Family HUB. Testimonials from parents describe age-appropriate costuming and choreography, a “dance family” experience, personal attention from teachers, and staff and instructors who care about each individual family.
