• Ages: 8–17 years old
• Schedule: Sessions of two weeks or longer
Shaffer's High Sierra Camp is led by Lisa and Scott Shaffer. The camp offers specialized program tracks in mountain biking, rock climbing, and outdoor living skills, as well as a leadership training program for campers who have attended at least one summer previously, are at least 14 years old, and are coming for a session of two weeks or longer. Enrollment is limited to 120 campers, and the camp does not have Wi‑Fi. The camp participates in a research study conducted by Stanford University's Graduate School of Education on life benefits provided by summer camp, and its policy prohibits unlawful discrimination based on a wide range of protected characteristics. It has been recommended by Outside Magazine and the LA Times, named by Outside Magazine as one of its five favorite camps in the U.S., and listed by Newsweek as one of the nation's best camps.
Parent testimonials describe campers looking forward to returning each summer, asking to extend their stay, and sharing stories of activities such as rock climbing, mountain boarding, crafts, hip hop, mountain biking, swimming in mountain lakes, and sleeping in a tipi. Parents report that their children met other kids from around the world, stayed in touch with friends after camp, and that campers of different ages, including first-time overnight campers and a child with Down syndrome, had positive experiences with staff described as supportive, encouraging, and non-punitive. Several parents mention that their children come home wanting to return the next year, that the environment is described as safe and friendly, and that the camp does not allow phones, iPads, or computers, which one family refers to as “Electronics Rehab.”
