Michael Katz Storytelling Workshops offers In-School Storytelling Residencies, In Service Storytelling Residencies, Adult Storytelling Workshops, Public Speaking Coaching, Create Your Own Storytelling Workshops, and Mindfulness in Schools residencies. Stories in these programs include multicultural folktales, myths, original stories, and personal narratives, presented in a highly energetic, animated, and interactive style of storytelling. The program has been presented at venues such as Disney Concert Hall and the Getty Museum, as well as at theatres, concert halls, festivals, school assemblies, libraries, and treehouses throughout the U.S.
Michael Katz is the storyteller leading the program. He has enjoyed telling stories since 1984 and was a founding member of the national touring theatre company BOXTALES in 1994. He served as the founding Artistic Director for the Flying Leap Storytelling Festival in Solvang, California. He hosted the radio storytelling program Katz Pajamas on NPR station KCBX FM, and his voice has been featured as the Narrator at the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His mission is to weave together both the comic and the profound using a highly energetic, animated, and interactive style of storytelling.
The program’s Mindfulness in Schools residencies offer short- and long-term residencies in schools teaching students and teachers mindfulness skills. These mindfulness skills address stress, impulsiveness, concentration, school rapport, conflict resolution, and classroom behavioral management. Schools have seen improvement in test scores and in the classroom environment from these mindfulness skills.
His voice has been featured as Narrator at some of the nation’s museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The Los Angeles Times wrote, “Michael Katz launched into his first tale, silence reigned. Katz is a versatile performer and wonderful storyteller.” The Santa Barbara Independent wrote, “He has such a gift for telling tales and reeling you into the story, the kids were transfixed.”
