After School: Create Your Own Storybook World!
Room 116, Sonoma Community Center, 276 East Napa Street, Sonoma, CA 95476
About
In this imaginative, hands-on art class, young artists will explore the magical worlds of beloved artists & illustrators. Each month they will learn about a different artist: Phoebe Wahl (January), Antje Damm (February), Karen Collins (March), Richard Scarry (April-May). Inspired by their playful styles, students will design and develop their very own characters—deciding where these characters live, work, play, eat, and sleep! Students will be working independently as well as in groups to develop their visual storytelling muscles.
Children will create 3D sculptural worlds from their conceptualized 2D drawings. They will bring their stories to life using a mix of expressive art materials, including:
- watercolor, paint, pens, and collage
- recycled and found objects to build unique scenes
Together, we will learn:
- How to use watercolor techniques to add color and mood
- How scale helps characters and environments feel real
- The arc of a story—beginning, middle, and end
- How to build a world using background, middle ground, and foreground
By the end of the class, each child will have created their own illustrated story scene full of imagination, personality, and creativity. A perfect class for kids who love drawing, storytelling, and building new worlds!
