Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe was founded in 1991 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and was accepted into the membership of Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1993. The organization is affiliated with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and follows its principles and guidelines while being managed and financed separately. Community members formed a Board of Directors to establish youth development programs for the South Shore community, and the Club is led by a Board of Directors and its first Executive Director. The Club expanded over the years through new charters and sites, including a public housing unit in 1995, Bijou Elementary and an expanded Al Tahoe Elementary site in 2004, and Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School in 2022. In December 2021, the Club launched the Building Bright Futures Campaign to raise remaining funds for a new clubhouse, and in April 2022 the Angel of Tahoe building was completed and opened to members. The Club began offering programs at Meyers Elementary School at the start of the 2022–2023 school year, at Tahoe Valley Elementary School for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten in the 2023–2024 school year, and expanded the Tahoe Valley site to serve transitional kindergarten through 5th grade in the 2024–2025 school year, with the Meyers site expanding to serve transitional kindergarten in 2025. The organization states its mission as “TO EMPOWER ALL YOUNG PEOPLE TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL” and notes that it is celebrating 35 years of being a place where young people can learn, grow, and build great futures. The Club describes itself as providing a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring, professional adults and dedicated volunteers, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences, and a focus on educational attainment and responsible citizenship.
