About

Harvest Outdoor Education offers enrichment classes for homeschooling families. The program uses a curriculum that includes Math, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Science, and it also focuses on the natural rhythms and seasons of the Southern California landscape. Classes meet in person outdoors in grade-level groups with teachers described as passionate in the program’s mission statement.

• Schedule: Classes meet in person, outdoors on Tuesday and Thursday.

Harvest Outdoor Education states that it values community and the role of nature in the educational journey, and it describes learning as something children can “harvest” in an organic way. The leadership team includes Andi Smith as Co-Owner and Curriculum Director, Kathryn Martin as Co-Owner and Administrative Director, and Michelle Gerola as Kindergarten Teacher. Andi Smith completed a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology from San Diego State University in 2012, then a Master’s in Education and a teaching credential with an emphasis in deaf and hard of hearing from the University of San Diego, along with additional training in parent-infant education and incorporating lessons and language development into everyday life; she has taught K–12 students with hearing loss in Santa Ana Unified School District. Kathryn Martin completed a Master’s in Education and teaching credential from the University of Southern California in 2015, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Literature, and began her career teaching high school English at Santa Margarita Catholic School. Michelle Gerola completed a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Cal State University, Fullerton in 2013 and has experience working with children in Pre-K through 6th grade at The Learning Connection (TLC), The Children’s Center, and Big Brothers Big Sisters OC. The program shares a quote in its materials: “Because children grow up, we think a child’s purpose is to grow up. But, a child’s purpose is to be a child.” Donations to support the program can be made through Zelle using the email [email protected], by check, or by purchasing items from its Amazon WishList and having them shipped to the staff’s homes.
