About

Sprouts Chef Training offers culinary training through a chef training program that includes chef training internships, restaurant internships, and job placement. The program also runs cooking classes for kids and hosts pop-up dinners with partner chefs.

Sprouts Chef Training pairs youth with a chef mentor and a case manager to develop the skills needed to secure and maintain a culinary job. Graduates use entry-level jobs to kickstart culinary careers, pay for education, or pursue new industries. Sprouts retired its cooking classes for kids to focus exclusively on Sprouts Chef Training as a vocational program for young adults. Chef mentors include chefs from restaurants such as Dalida & Maria Isabel, Niku Steakhouse, Nopa, Slanted Door, MAMA Oakland, Foreign Cinema, Californios, and Chop Bar.

The organization states the mission, “We believe in a world where all youth have access to economic opportunity and fulfilling career pathways.” Sprouts uses the phrases “Jobs Change Lives. Kitchens Heal. It Takes a Village” and “Kitchens heal. Jobs change lives. It takes a village.”

Sprouts launched in the Bay Area in 2006 under the name “Sprouts Cooking Club.” In Spring 2012, Sprouts created a Chef Training Program, and since 2021, it has focused exclusively on Sprouts Chef Training. Sprouts welcomed its 100th trainee in November 2022. Sprouts Annual Gala in March 2023 raised $400,000, funding chef training internships for 80 youth. Sprouts has a goal of reaching 200 youth annually by 2025. In Summer 2024, Sprouts launches the Chef Training Program in NYC.

Sprouts teams up with Jamie Oliver and works with Sprouts Partner Restaurants. It is supported by sponsors, product partners, and chef trainee funders. As part of its NYC launch, Sprouts hosts a series of pop-up dinners with partner chefs to build East Coast community.

The leadership team includes Kate Rogers (Founder & Growth Lead), Catie Cohen (Executive Director), Hannah Rubino (Program Director), Ava Planer (Program Coordinator), Monika Deksnys (Communications Lead), and Devika Nair (Accountant).
