Kliptown Youth Program Tutoring Program offers tutoring, study sessions, homework assistance, and online learning, with a focus on English and maths. Children also take part in computer classes on internet skills and Microsoft Office, performing arts, cultural activities such as dancing and drumming including the Gumboots Dance group, and sports such as soccer and netball. The program uses online learning programs such as Reading Eggs, Math Seeds, Olico, MyCyberwall, and 2Enable.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: All children from Grade 1 through Grade 12 attend tutoring and study sessions for two hours, Monday through Thursday afternoons.
• Price: R100 000 ($8,000) pays for a learner to attend University for a year (including tuition, books, laptop computer, transport, accommodation, spending allowance and mentorship). R50 000 ($4,000) sponsors a major program or need for all the children for one year (e.g., textbooks, sports or performing arts). R7 000 ($550) sponsors a child to attend KYP for a year (including school fees, uniforms, two meals per day, after-school tutoring, a safe place to play, arts, sports and computer programs). R1 000 ($80) feeds a child for a year (two meals per day).
Kliptown Youth Program was founded in May 2007 and has grown to an internationally recognized organization. KYP is a community based educational organisation that focuses on members’ education and personal development, supports their needs, and connects them with opportunities that will help them support themselves and their families. KYP’s founders grew up in Kliptown, and primary school students are tutored by community members who have completed KYP’s tutor training program and are introduced to principles of child development and classroom management, while high school students are tutored by professional teachers two days a week and participate in peer-to-peer tutoring the other two days. Since its inception, KYP has covered the cost of school fees for all of its members, provides each child who has been a member for the past year with a new uniform at the start of the school year through Tailored for Education, and provides all members with two nutritious meals a day.
KYP’s centre is powered with a solar array on top of the classrooms due to no access to electricity in the community. KYP’s tertiary education program supports students in disciplines including Information Technology, Banking, Electrical Engineering and Marketing, and connects members with learnerships and jobs through companies such as Tradesure Insurance and Bidvest Pureau. KYP also teaches free computer classes on internet skills and Microsoft Office to community members to help them access job opportunities, and companies such as Tradesure Insurance and Bidvest Pureau have been helpful in offering opportunities and advice to members. KYP’s renowned Gumboots Dance group has been performing in major events around South Africa and abroad since KYP’s inception and gives members the opportunity of world travel, and high-level coaches mentor kids on life skills such as determination and teamwork through sports teams that compete in township leagues and have won numerous tournaments.
KYP has established a psychosocial support centre for members and their families where they can seek the advice of counsellors in a safe, confidential environment. KYP receives support through One World Children’s Fund, a US-based 501c3, and foundations, corporations, and organizations have funded KYP’s tutoring and food programs, buildings, salaries and stipends for the staff, the athletic program, and other elements of KYP's mission. The Executive Director of KYP is Thulani Madondo.
