About

THE Oakland Volleyball Program offers 2-Day Clinics that focus on hitting, passing, setting, serving, and game situations. The program also includes club volleyball, League Tournaments, competitions, camps, and clinics.

• Ages: 11–18 years old
• Schedule: Summer 2-Day Clinics in June run Monday and Wednesday from 6–8PM, with sessions grouped by age (12 & Under, 13–14s, 15–16s); the club season generally runs from January to June with 1–2 tournaments per month, and practices are usually on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays between 6–9PM for 90 minutes to 2 hours; additional girls’ clinics and callouts are scheduled in July and October, and boys’ clinics and callouts in August, with boys’ club volleyball tryouts in August followed by League Tournaments from September through January, a break from February through April, and competitions, camps, and clinics from May through July.
• Price: 2-Day Clinics cost $100; the full six-month club season fee is $2100, which is significantly less than the $4,000 to $8,000 charged by most club volleyball teams that provide similar services.

THE Oakland Volleyball Program has been in operation for over 25 years and was established in 1998, and it was formerly known as Starlings Oakland. The program is led by Program Director Lisa Busbee-Young. It participates in club volleyball through the Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA) of USA Volleyball (USAV), does the full Premier League Schedule along with several special tournaments and qualifiers, and may do the Power League Schedule if it is seen as a beneficial option for the team, players, and coaches. The program states that it excludes no girl due to financial hardship and that it provides the same (if not better) training, experience, and benefits as other clubs, as well as assistance with travel and accommodations for tournaments.

THE Oakland Volleyball Program states that it has a commitment to providing affordable volleyball programming in Oakland to those who would otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in club volleyball at the Junior Olympic level, and that it makes its volleyball program an affordable option for families who cannot pay the more expensive fees at other clubs. It describes itself as a non-profit that focuses on benefiting Oakland and the volleyball community and has partnered with the Oakland Athletic League (OAL) to provide resources, increase participation, and grow the sport of volleyball in the Oakland area. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, monetary donations to THE Oakland Volleyball Program are tax-deductible.
