Batter Up Baseball Camp enters its 33rd year this summer and has run since 1994. Each week, the camp includes over 40 coaches. The camp’s stated mission is to promote a fun and competitive atmosphere where kids from all leagues, towns, and abilities have thrived for over 3 decades.

The Camp Director is Bill Buscetto, a member of the CT Association of Athletic Directors and CT High School Coaches Association, and he is the Chairman of the CHSCA Baseball Committee. Bill was an All-American catcher at the University of New Haven, led UNH to the Division 2 College World Series, and won the New England Collegiate Conference batting title as a senior with a .404 average. He was inducted into the University of New Haven Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 and the St. Bernard Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. Bill is a former Athletic Director of St. Bernard High School and Lyme-Old Lyme High School, and his leadership in the athletic department was recognized with CIAC Michael’s Cup annual awards for outstanding athletic achievement by a school in 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2015. Since 1994, he has run Batter Up Baseball Camp for thousands of kids ranging from ages 5–13 during the summer.

The leadership team includes Camp Director Bill Buscetto and Director of Player Development Isaak Lazarou. Desarae Latino is the certified athletic trainer and has been the camp’s athletic trainer for all 32 years since Batter Up started, and during the school year she is a Special Education teacher in Groton. Billy Buscetto Jr helps coordinate team selections and player transactions with Coach Lazarou. Sawyer Gregory, who started as a camper at 6 years old and has never left, is now Supervisor of Showtime Field and during the school year is a teacher at Mile Creek School in Old Lyme, CT. Jordan Buscetto compiles registration lists, teams, t-shirts, and parent email addresses and is a Guidance Counselor at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in Cape Cod during the school year. Tim Payne is a coach at Batter Up, supervises the Mets-Braves games each week, works as a special education teacher at Fitch High School in Groton during the school year, and has coached baseball, basketball, and golf at the high school level. Coach Lazarou oversees all player trades and transactions each week and keeps all teams under the BUP salary cap, and has volunteered a significant amount of time giving back to New London Little League as well as the camp.

The coaching staff includes Joe Funaro, JJ Koning, Harry “JR” Chiappone, and Casey O’Neill. Coach Funaro was an All-American baseball player at Eastern CT State University and played 6 seasons of professional baseball in the Florida Marlins organization, reaching the AAA level, playing in Major League Spring Training games, and retiring with a professional batting average of .307. Harry “JR” Chiappone was the first baseball All-American at Mitchell College back in 1993 when they were a Junior College, and his image was used as the initial logo of Batter Up, taken from a picture from his first career college home run. Coach Casey went on to play for New London High School and Wesleyan University. Billy is a certified personal trainer. Jordan was a two-time captain of the Brandeis University softball team and helped lead them to the 2015 ECAC Championship.

According to Coach Buscetto, Batter Up Baseball Camp enters its 33rd year this summer and has provided fun and lasting memories since it started in 1994, with thousands of children attending and learning lessons such as teamwork, patience, never giving up, and always hustling. He states that baseball is a hard game to play and that making it fun for kids as they are learning has always been his goal, and he looks forward to seeing everybody on the ball field.
