J & S Youth Theater Program gives young people hands-on experience in acting, singing, and dancing, along with the behind-the-scenes work that goes into a show. Participants take part in theater production activities such as stage management, costume design, lighting, and sound, guided by a team with professional and teaching experience in the performing arts.

The program is part of On Stage Vacaville, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that has been setting the stage for the performing arts in Vacaville since 2001 and is volunteer run. On Stage Vacaville states that it strives to promote genuine human expression through the arts and to create experiences for the community to be valued, represented, and entertained, with a focus on equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in cultural education. It notes that it supports cultural education through highly diverse performing arts programming for all ages and brings the arts to underserved communities such as seniors, the disabled, and people experiencing financial insecurities, including disabled adults and youth, low income youth with an interest in music, school children, and non-typical theater-goers interested in educational topics offered through performance. On Stage Vacaville is located in the rural city of Vacaville in California’s agricultural central valley.

The leadership team for J & S Youth Theater Program and its parent organization includes Candice Miller (Program Coordinator & Lead Stage Manager), Jeremy Kreamer (Musical Director), Andrea Davis (Director, Teen Production), Gabe Carrier (Associate Director, Teen Production), Laura Millar (Director, Youth Program), Analisa Borja (Associate Director, Youth Production), Don Miller (Set Designer & Prop Master), Lisa Hilas (President), Toni Staniewicz (Executive Producer), Nikila Walker Gibson (Director, Community Engagement), Abby Richie (Director of Marketing), and Nancy Bennett (Vice President, Administration). Staff experience includes Candice Miller’s 25 years as an interactive performer at the Northern California Renaissance Faire and work as a professional animal trainer on theater stages, photo shoots, and film productions; Jeremy Kreamer’s professional performing since age eight, Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, numerous musical theatre productions, dance training, jazz and tap classes with Lisa Clark and Staci Arriaga, and acting classes throughout the Bay Area; Andrea Davis’s musical theatre studies at CSU Fullerton and bachelor’s degree in nursing from Sac State; Laura Millar’s nearly decade-long experience teaching drama and musical theatre to children, professional work as an actor, director, dramaturg, and teaching artist in the Bay Area, current role as Director of the Arts at St. Francis High School in Sacramento, and degrees in Acting (Sonoma State) and Arts Management (University of Oklahoma); Analisa Borja’s bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre from Long Beach State with an emphasis in directing and production management and a minor in entrepreneurship, direction of five productions at CSULB, leadership of the annual New Players Festival, and service as Artistic Director overseeing a season of 26 student-run shows each year; and Don Miller’s training in the Actor’s Training Program at Solano Community College, co-founding and performing with the improv comedy troupe The Rats in the Alley for ten years, and founding membership in ComedySportz Sacramento.

On Stage Vacaville notes that it emphasizes a safe, welcoming, all-inclusive environment regardless of background, abilities, gender identification, and race, and that the program welcomes participants regardless of experience level. It describes mentorship in the program as coming from industry professionals and community talents. The organization also notes that Toni Staniewicz, the Executive Producer, is the Founder of the Wild West Film Festival 2019 and Comedy Cash Cow Competition 2024, is a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild and National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, was a 2018 award winner of the California Film Foundation “Vanguard,” a 2018 winner of the Equality Film Festival “Trail Blazer” Award, a 2018 award winner of the El Dorado Film Commissioner Award, and was named The Frank Casanova – Film Arts Champion 2023 People Choice Award by the Sacramento Film Festival.
