Up Next Basketball Academy was founded in 2021 as a private training organization and expanded into a full youth basketball program in 2022. The program is year-round and is built on a “Win Within” mindset, with an emphasis on inclusivity, sportsmanship, and personal growth. It is for children of all skill levels who are committed and passionate about basketball, and it focuses heavily on fundamentals and true skill development with instruction in every area of the game. The program states that beyond basketball it strives to teach leadership skills, accountability, being coachable, and to help young athletes build confidence, discipline, resilience, and teamwork, and that no matter a child’s experience level, goals, or background, there is a place for them at Up Next Basketball Academy.

Founder and Director Coach Rashaad Allen has coaching and skills training experience at the youth, high school, and college level. Growing up in Northern California, he attended and played basketball for Rodriguez High School in Fairfield, where in his senior year he led the Mustangs in scoring and steals and earned Offensive Player of the Year, 1st Team All-League, All-City, and a league championship. He then played two seasons at College of Marin in Kentfield, where as a sophomore he was an All–Bay Valley Conference 1st Team member after averaging 12.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game, connecting on 74% of his free throws and 43% from beyond the arc, and helping the team to a 16–10 record. After College of Marin, he earned a full-ride scholarship to NCAA Division II University of Alaska–Fairbanks, where as a senior he was a GNAC All-Academic member and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, graduated with a 4.0 GPA with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, and was on both the Dean’s List and the Chancellor’s List. The leadership team also includes Coach Jason, Coach Rick, Coach Kayson, Coach Marcus, Coach Alex, Coach Jordan, Coach Peter, and Coach Chad.

The program’s mission is to instill confidence in each of its student-athletes and create an environment that empowers leadership and life skills. Its stated community goal is to serve as positive role models to the children of the community by inspiring and motivating kids from all walks of life. One parent described it as “so refreshing to have a coach that works really well with young kids but also pushes them to their full potential.”
