• Ages: 5–18 years old
For more than 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. The mission of Scouting America – Western Los Angeles County Council is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The council serves 65% of Los Angeles County and includes more than 10,000 Scouts in programs such as Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Explorers. The council uses the phrase “Prepared. For Life.®”.
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is highlighted in several participant testimonials. One 2023 course participant and 2-year staff member, Max S., describes remembering NYLT and learning about how to work in groups. Another participant and 3-year staff member, Rachel B., states that NYLT changed the way she approaches public speaking. A 2023 NYLT participant and 2-year staff member, Ansel C., calls NYLT a once in a lifetime experience. Another NYLT participant and 3-year staff member, Addison T., describes NYLT as one of the most useful programs they have participated in and mentions using communication knowledge in dual enrollment classes. A Scout mother, Shannon A., shares that her daughter enjoyed the merit badge courses through the council and that these classes led her to help the council build a better virtual merit badge program.
