The program’s mission states that it offers 100% outdoor Kindergarten–12th grade natural, organic learning where students experience real life in real time as an antithesis to public and private school classrooms. It describes celebrating nature, individuality, and freedom in the urban outdoors, with an alternative education model that is about relationships with each other and with the land. According to the mission, learning is child led and teacher supported, with everyone learning through play, conversation, and direct experience. The stated developmental approach respects everyone for who they are and encourages growth in head (knowledge), heart (social and emotional), hands (physical), and ecological realms, with lessons described as organic and woven from educator experiences, participants’ strengths, challenges, interests, and daily environmental conditions and needs.

Heather is listed as part of the leadership team. The information notes that Outside School is no longer accepting applications because business expenses have outrun enrollment income, and that Bandana Bear and Outside School Nature Helpers are still active projects.
