About
Willits Kids Club offers activities such as gardening, sports, games, art, crafts, ceramics, cooking, building projects, and service projects. The Baechtel Grove Kids Club after school program for 6th through 8th graders includes time for hanging out after school, getting help with homework, and making and creating things.
• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: After school program runs from school dismissal until 6 PM on every day that school is in session
Willits Kids Club began with an organizational meeting on October 28, 1999, was incorporated in March 2000, and its youth center was completed in 2009. The after school program serves nearly 200 children per day and includes an Elementary Kids Club for grades K–5 that serves Brookside and Blosser Lane schools, as well as a middle school program at Baechtel Grove for grades 6–8. Elementary school students from Brookside ride the school bus to the Willits Kids Club Youth Center on Blosser Lane, and the first order of business after school is a healthy snack. Monday through Thursday, students are given academic support through reading groups. The middle school program works with school sports teams and after school activities, and kids check in at Kids Club, get a snack, do some homework, and then go to their sports practice. Leadership and service opportunities are offered.
The mission of Willits Kids Club is to provide a safe place for the children of Willits to play, learn, and grow, with youth guidance as the primary goal. Many staff members have been with Willits Kids Club for up to 10 years or longer, many have worked with children in education as classroom aides and continue to work in the schools, and many are bilingual. The leadership team includes Gerry Gonzalez (President), Bruce Yoxall, Pat Yoxall (Treasurer), Cyndi Pfingsten, Davey Bowles, Bianca Nieto, Tracie Mello, TaNea Yager (Site Director), and Jaedyn Dondero (Baechtel Grove Coordinator). A community partnership formed to support the program, with major funding from grants from the State of California, County of Mendocino, FIRST 5, and many other businesses, groups, and individuals.
Staff testimonials describe enjoying working with a wide variety of age groups, doing cooking projects, crafts, gardening, games, sports, and outdoor activities, and getting to know the kids and their personalities. Several staff members mention long-term ties to Kids Club or the community, and many share personal interests such as video games, drawing, hiking, knitting, snowboarding, playing guitar, and maintaining play areas and gardens.
