Folklorico Latino de Woodland was founded in 1986 by James Harvey-Keith, Helena Ochoa, and Marina Ramirez. It is a non-profit 503c organization with a mission to promote awareness of Mexican culture through dance, music, song, and folklore through performances and by participating in local community events. The organization describes diversity as its greatest strength, with people of all age and experience levels exercising together and having fun. It offers youth classes for children and teens to develop self-confidence, physical strength and flexibility, self-discipline, positive body image, and creative expression while learning about Mexican culture, as well as adult classes for adults 18 and over interested in Folklorico dance.
Folklorico Latino de Woodland presents performances during the year at private functions and at community events throughout Yolo and Sacramento Counties. The group holds an annual show at the end of the year, and its 39th Annual Performance “Aqui Estoy” is scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2025, with a 1:00 pm matinee and a full evening show with live mariachi at 7:00 pm at the Davis High School Richard Brunelle Performance Hall. The organization also offers the Marina Ramirez Youth Scholarship to active Folklorico Latino de Woodland members who are graduating from high school and choosing to continue their education at a college or university. One testimonial shared by the program is: “To dance is to be out of yourself. Larger, more beautiful, more powerful… This is power, it is glory on earth and it is yours for the taking.”
